3D Printing "Artificial Acetabular Cup Implantation Guider"

Almost every new application and research is born under the persistent promotion of a person or a group. The same is true of this guide plate. DrGek Lim talks about the birth of acetabular implant guides and thanks this "Bole" again and again.

In 2015, DrGekLim began developing 3D digital reconstruction software. As a top orthopaedic expert, he gave many opinions and suggestions on this software, which was the basis for the subsequent 3D printing of acetabular implant guides to play a role. DrGek Lim, who travels around the world all the year round, knows all the orthopaedic surgical tools and instruments around the world. "Previously, two surgical drill guides have been developed in foreign countries, which are used to grind acetabulum and implant prosthesis respectively, but the two are separated. Doctors need to use them twice, which is inconvenient to use. Some surgical drill guides need to be reformed, which is difficult to popularize.” Drawing on these experiences, D rG ekLim formed an idea and scheme in March 2016 and began to apply for a patent. "But after all, this is only a technical level. To use it in clinic, it is necessary to show the clinician whether to use it or not.” D rG EK Lim thought of the Foshan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital led by Liu.

One day in May 2016, she took a photograph of the design and found President Liu. " He said at the time that the design was good so that we could do it first. However, from design research to successful application, we need to go through the process of continuous improvement.

As time progressed to June 2016, a telephone call from President Liu speeded up the application of 3-D printed acetabular prosthesis implant guider. " President Liu called me and said, "Let me make a guide first. I want to use it in surgery. If it is successful, it will be explained as a case at the International Orthopaedic Conference in August." Dr. GekLim began to use 3D digital modeling immediately after receiving images of patients who had undergone hip replacement surgery in our hospital, including CT scans and X-rays.

"After modeling, the hip joint model should be printed according to the ratio of 1:1, then the appropriate guide should be designed according to the model, and then printed by a 3D printer.” Each hip model is personalized, with different shapes, and the designed guide is unique. This 10 cm long strip resembling a horseshoe magnet and another semi-circular strip resemble a surgical drill guide. "Looking simple, the design is still very difficult, the vertical guide can not be too long, nor too short, too long will not be put in, too short will be blocked by muscles." The transverse guide plate should be seamlessly butted with the patient's hip joint, and on the same horizontal plane, neither protruding nor concave, and the strength should be just right. " The length of the transverse guide plate should not exceed half of the acetabular cup. For example, the diameter of the acetabular prosthesis is 4 cm, and the transverse guide plate should not exceed 2 cm. Too long will block the doctor's operation.

D rGekLim, which specializes in technical products, has not had much orthopaedic experience. The first production was pointed out by President Liu. "For the first time, we designed a circular transverse guide plate. As soon as President Liu saw it, he said that it could not be used clinically.

"President Liu suggested that the guide plate should be shorter and not interfere with the doctor's operation, but it should not be too short and not be blocked by muscles. DrGek Lim improved the length of the guide device of the drill according to the suggestion of President Liu. The second set of guide was approved by President Liu, and Liu put forward some suggestions for further modification.
