New Applications of Titanium Alloys

Titanium precision parts were widely used in aerospace field in the early years, mainly in the manufacture of aircraft engines or pneumatic components. Later, with the continuous development of technology, titanium alloys have entered the lives of ordinary people, and there are also titanium alloys in factories or household devices. Now various countries and institutions are competing to develop new titanium alloys, which have the characteristics of low cost and high performance. In recent years, the new development of titanium alloys mainly concentrates on the following six aspects.

(1) Medical titanium alloy

Titanium alloy is an ideal medical material with low density and good biocompatibility. It can even be implanted into human body. Titanium alloys previously used in medical fields contain vanadium and aluminium, which can cause harm to human body. However, in recent years, Japanese scholars have developed new titanium alloys, which have good biocompatibility and can be used in the manufacture of Titanium precision parts. But at present, this kind of alloy has not been produced in large quantities. It is believed that in the near future, this kind of high-quality alloy can be widely used in daily life.

(2) Flame Retardant Titanium Alloys

The flame retardant titanium alloy can resist combustion under certain pressure, temperature and air velocity. New flame retardant titanium alloys have been developed in the United States, Russia and China. These flame retardant titanium alloys are used in engines in the United States, because they are insensitive to combustion, so they can greatly improve the stability of engines.

(3) High strength and toughness Beta-type

The Beta-type titanium alloy has the characteristics of high strength, good weldability and excellent cold and hot working performance. Using this rule, the characteristics of Beta-type titanium alloys prepared by researchers are very obvious. It has good workability, good plasticity and good weldability, and its mechanical properties have been greatly improved after Solution-Aging treatment. At present, these titanium alloys have been prepared in Japan and Russia.

(4) Titanium-aluminium compounds

Compared with general titanium alloys, titanium-aluminium compounds have high temperature properties, good oxidation resistance and creep resistance, and lower density than general titanium alloys. These excellent characteristics doomed to a new upsurge of alloys for titanium and aluminium compounds. At present, this new titanium-aluminium compound alloy has been synthesized in the United States and is being produced in batches.

(5) High temperature titanium alloy

Titanium alloys prepared by combining rapid solidification with powder metallurgy using composite materials reinforced by fibers or particles have excellent high temperature mechanical properties. The service temperature limit of high temperature titanium alloy is much higher than that of common titanium alloy. Nowadays, a new type of high temperature titanium alloy has been prepared in the United States.

(6) Ti-Ni alloy

Titanium and nickel alloys are called "memory alloys". The alloy is made into a pre-determined shape and then shaped. If it is deformed by external force, it can be restored to its original appearance by a little heating. This alloy can be used in instruments, electronic devices and other fields requiring Titanium precision parts.
